MEMORANDUM

Posted: December 1, 2016 01:10 PM
From: Representative Mark M. Gillen
To: All House members
Subject: Cosponsorship of Resolution Marking the 75th Anniversary of “Doolittle’s Raiders”

I will once again be introducing a resolution in honor of the anniversary of Doolittle’s Raiders attack on the mainland of Japan during World War II.

In April 1942, Lt. Col. James H. “Jimmy” Doolittle led sixteen bombers in an unprecedented and dangerous mission to strike a blow to the Japanese. The boost to American morale made this mission a success, which set the stage for future American victories, such as at the Battle of Midway.

Due to their heroism in this attack, all 80 crew members received the Distinguished Flying Cross. Three men were killed or fatally injured during the mission; several more were captured and either executed or imprisoned. Many who survived continued to fly missions for the United States during the remainder of World War II. Lt. Col. Doolittle was awarded the Medal of Honor for leading the mission.

Please join me in commemorating the 75th anniversary of this significant event and honoring the sacrifice of the brave Doolittle’s Raiders.
