Subject: | Commemorating 33 Years of German Reunification |
Soon, I will introduce a resolution to recognize the 33rd anniversary of the reunification of Germany. Following the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, West German Chancellor Helmut Kohl called for the reunification of Germany, a proposal that was strongly supported by U.S. President George H. W Bush. After fierce debate and diplomatic maneuvering, the German Democratic Republic (East Germany) was incorporated into the Federal Republic of Germany on October 3, 1990. Today, the United States and Germany enjoy a strong relationship. More than 40 million Americans can trace their family history back to Germany. In Pennsylvania, there are 3.5 million people with German ancestry making it the state with the largest population of German Americans. Please join me in cosponsoring this resolution to commemorate 33 years of German Reunification and to honor the special relationship between the United States and the Federal Republic of Germany. |
