Senate of Pennsylvania
Session of 2023 - 2024 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: April 21, 2023 03:38 PM
From: Senator Scott Martin and Sen. Cris Dush, Sen. Wayne Langerholc, Jr., Sen. Devlin J. Robinson
To: All Senate members
Subject: Honoring Pennsylvania’s 2023 NCAA National Wrestling Champions, All-Americans and Penn State’s NCAA National Wrestling Team Championship

In the near future, Senators Dush, Langerholc, Robinson and I will introduce a resolution to recognize the achievements of Pennsylvania’s collegiate wrestlers for earned individual titles and all-American honors during the 2023 NCAA Wrestling Championships, as well as the achievements of several Pennsylvania natives who competed with teams from other states that saw their own successes and made their Pennsylvania hometown communities proud.

In part due to the tremendous coaching of Cael Sanderson and his staff, two PSU wrestlers, Carter Starocci and Aaron Brooks, each won individual NCAA titles in their respective weight classes for the third time. PSU set several school records while tying a previous one of featuring eight All-Americans in a single season. For the first time ever, PSU saw seven athletes place in the top three of their respective weight divisions and were crowned the NCAA Team Champions; their 10th team title in the last 12 NCAA championship tournaments.  Winning by 55.0 team points, it was the largest margin of victory in the school’s history. The other top finishers included: Roman Bravo-Young, Beau Bartlett, Shayne Van Ness, Levi Haines, Max Dean and Greg Kerkvliet.

Pennsylvania’s representation at the tournament continued the Commonwealth’s long and rich history as a powerhouse in the sport of wrestling. Twenty of the eighty All-Americans in the 2022-23 NCAA Wrestling Championship Tournament either wrestled for a Pennsylvania University or are Pennsylvania natives themselves. One athlete in particular, Bethel Park native Nino Bonaccorsi, who competed for the University of Pittsburgh, earned the gold for the first time in his collegiate career.

Our resolution will highlight each of these athletes as well as those Pennsylvania wrestlers that placed in the top three of their weight classes. Those top finishers included: Spencer Lee (Murrysville), Max Murin (Ebensburg), Mikey Labriola (Easton), Sammy Sasso (Nazareth), Ethan Smith (Latrobe), Ed Scott (Dubois), Trent Hidlay (Lewistown), Ethan Laird (McKean) as well as Anthony Noto of Lock Haven University, Will Feldkamp of Clarion University and Josh Humphreys of Lehigh University.

These young men have continued to set a high standard of excellence, and more importantly, set an incredible example to younger athletes across our Commonwealth. Please join us in congratulating them on their outstanding efforts on the mat.
