Senate of Pennsylvania
Session of 2021 - 2022 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: December 4, 2020 10:35 AM
From: Senator David G. Argall
To: All Senate members
Subject: Reforming the process of electing the Lieutenant Governor

I will be re-introducing legislation that would amend the state Constitution to allow gubernatorial candidates to select their own running mate. This will be done in a manner similar to the process in which Presidential candidates select their running mates.

Under my bill, the candidates for governor and lieutenant governor can run as a team with a shared vision for the Commonwealth. This bill would provide for greater trust in the executive branch to delegate duties while avoiding potential division and friction between the two office holders.

This bi-partisan bill passed the General Assembly last year (130 to 67 in the House of Representatives and 46 to 2 in the Senate) but needs to pass the legislature again this year before it is placed on the ballot for the voters of Pennsylvania to decide.

I hope you will join me on co-sponsoring this legislation.

Introduced as SB106
