Subject: | School Property Tax Payment and Penalty Relief |
Soon I will introduce a new version of Senate Bill 1125 from the 2019-2020 legislative session. This legislation will build upon my recent efforts to allow school districts the option to provide needed relief to property taxpayers in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Last session, the General Assembly unanimously approved Act 75 of 2020, which provided the option to extend the property tax discount period and/or waive penalties for late payments through the end of the 2020-2021 school year. This legislation would extend this option for another year. While the relief measures in Act 75 were helpful in providing aid to many taxpayers across the Commonwealth, due to the timing of the pandemic and the delivery of tax notices, utilization varied amongst school districts. This legislation will grant continued flexibility for the near future and considers for the need for advanced planning. Please join me in co-sponsoring this legislation as we look to extend relief to property taxpayers during these unprecedented times. |
