MEMORANDUM

Posted: March 12, 2020 06:26 PM
From: Senator Doug Mastriano and Sen. David G. Argall
To: All Senate members
Subject: Resolution Designating March as “Lithuanian Independence Restoration Month”

In the near future, I will be introducing a resolution designating March 2020 as “Lithuanian Independence Restoration Month” in Pennsylvania.

March 2020 marks the 30th anniversary of the restoration of Lithuanian independence from the Soviet Union. This independence came at a high price for Lithuania, and all Baltic people.

Pennsylvania has extensive ethnic and cultural ties with the Lithuanian people. Additionally, Pennsylvania has close ties with Lithuania politically and militarily.

Just three years after Lithuania secured its hard-fought victory for freedom, the PA National Guard and the Lithuanian Armed Forces were aligned as part of the state partnership program. The partnership was established April 27, 1993 and – as a result – Pennsylvania’s brave men & women are serving in Lithuania. This expanded and built upon Pennsylvania’s extensive and deep ties with Lithuania.

It is a partnership borne out of the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991, and with Lithuania observing its 30th anniversary of its Restoration of Independence, there is no better occasion to recognize our state’s partnership with this Baltic nation.

The goal of my resolution is to bring more attention to Pennsylvania’s affiliation and history with Lithuania, as well as the great history of the Lithuanian people.

Please join me in co-sponsoring this resolution. If you have any questions, please contact Scot Pitzer in my office at 717-787-4651.
