Senate of Pennsylvania
Session of 2017 - 2018 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: October 12, 2017 10:00 AM
From: Senator Scott Martin
To: All Senate members
Subject: Recognizing November 14, 2017 as "World Diabetes Day"

In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution to recognize November 14, 2017 as “World Diabetes Day” in Pennsylvania.

In 1991, “World Diabetes Day” was first recognized by organizations such as the International Diabetes Federation and the World Health Organization in order to help raise awareness of the growing rate of this disease. Since then, “World Diabetes Day” has become an official observance of the United Nations as this chronic disease has become more prevalent worldwide.

According to the 2017 National Diabetes Statistics Report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there are 23.1 million people in the United States diagnosed with the disease and approximately 1.4 million new cases of diabetes are diagnosed in the United States each year. Estimates also suggest that 7.2 million people have gone undiagnosed.

In 2014, diabetes contributed to 3,755 deaths in Pennsylvania making it one of the top 5 causes of health-related deaths in the Commonwealth and the 7th leading cause of death in the United States. Although there is no known cure for diabetes, the risk of being diagnosed can be reduced through a healthy diet, physical activity, and the use of prescribed medication.

I hope you will join me in co-sponsoring this resolution and to raise awareness of the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle to help mitigate this disease.
