Subject: | Jury Duty Exemption – Emergency Services Personnel |
In the near future, I plan to introduce legislation (Former HB 1837) to add an exemption for jury duty for emergency services personnel. Last year I was contacted by a constituent who serves as a volunteer firefighter in a relatively small company, and whose absence from that service over a period of days or weeks would have seriously compromised the ability of the company to respond to emergencies. Despite the fact that the fire chief sent a letter explaining the situation, the firefighter was not excused because his reason for requesting to be excused was not one of the reasons enumerated in the statute. To me this seems a matter of common sense to protect the interests of our communities, but if legislation is required to make common sense our practice, then so be it. I respectfully ask that you join me in co-sponsoring this common sense piece of legislation.
