Subject: Establishing the Task Force on Women Veterans’ Health Care (Former HR 324)

In the near future, we will be introducing legislation to establish the Task Force on Women Veterans’ Health Care in the Commonwealth. This bill is part of the Pennsylvania Agenda for Women’s Health, a comprehensive proposal to address the real health issues affecting Pennsylvania women veterans today. It is our sincere hope you will join us in this effort.

As of 2013, the total veteran population in the United States and Puerto Rico was 21,972,964, with women veterans making up 2,271,222 or 10 percent of that total. In Pennsylvania alone there are nearly 80,000 women veterans. By 2040 it is estimated that women will make up approximately 18 percent of the total veterans’ population. While the proportion of women veterans to male veterans continues to increase, the unique health needs of women can be overlooked in providing services to a large, and predominantly male, veteran population.

Our legislation will establish the Task Force on Women Veterans’ Health Care in Pennsylvania. The overall goal of this Task Force will be to study the health issues facing women veterans and make recommendations to the Governor and General Assembly by April 30, 2018. The 17-member Task Force will be composed of various individuals, including four women veterans who are Commonwealth residents, representatives from the health care provider community, advocates, and various state agency secretaries.

This legislation is a crucial step in ensuring our state continues to honor our commitment to provide for our brave residents that risk everything for the service of this Commonwealth and country. We invite all members to co-sponsor this crucial legislation.
