MEMORANDUM

Posted: February 18, 2014 04:20 PM
From: Representative John Taylor
To: All House members
Subject: Granting certain retired police officers and firefighters a cost of living adjustment (COLA)

I am planning to introduce a bill that will amend Act 147 of 1988, Special Ad Hoc Municipal Police and Firefighter Postretirement Adjustment Act. This will allow many of our retired municipal police officers and firefighters to receive a much needed and well deserved COLA.

These brave first responders have provided a great service to their respective communities during their tenure of employment and have often risked their own lives to keep others safe. The last time a cost of living increase was granted to these brave men and women was twelve years ago in 2002. Therefore, it is only fitting that we provide them with the means to help live a quality life in their retirement from public service.

My proposal sets eligibility requirements as follows:

1. The retiree has terminated employment with the municipality as a police officer or firefighter.
2. The retiree is receiving the retirement benefit from a municipal retirement system on the basis of active employment with the municipality as a police officer or firefighter.
3. The retiree began receiving the retirement benefit before January 1, 2010.

Please join me in sponsoring this proposal. Thank you!
