Subject: | Designating November 14, 2023, as "World Diabetes Day" in Pennsylvania |
In the near future, I will reintroduce a resolution to recognize November 14, 2023, as “World Diabetes Day” in Pennsylvania. Diabetes is a chronic health condition that affects the body’s ability to turn food into energy. Insulin is produced in response to fluctuations of sugar in our bloodstream. With diabetes, a person’s body either does not make enough insulin or their cells stop responding to insulin, resulting in too much blood sugar staying in the individual’s bloodstream. According to the most updated data provided by the Centers for Diseases Control and Prevention, approximately 37.3 million (11.3% of the total U.S. population) Americans live with diagnosed or undiagnosed diabetes. Additionally, 96 million (38% of the adult U.S. population) individuals live with prediabetes. These figures have steadily increased over the years. Unfortunately, the rise in diabetes corresponds directly with the rise in other associated health complications including but not limited to heart disease, kidney disease, nerve damage, vision and hearing loss and issues related to mental health. “World Diabetes Day” was first celebrated in 1991 and was recognized by organizations such as the International Diabetes Federation and the World Health Organization to help raise awareness of the growing rate of diabetes in the world. Although there is no known cure for diabetes, the risk of being diagnosed and the effects post diagnosis can be mitigated through a healthy diet, physical activity and the use of prescribed medication. With greater awareness of risk factors and healthy habits, Pennsylvanians can help curb the growing trends. Please join me in co-sponsoring this resolution and help to raise awareness of the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle to help reduce the prevalence of diabetes in Pennsylvania. |
