Subject: | Recognizing September 18-24 as "National Adult Education and Family Literacy Week" in Pennsylvania |
In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution recognizing the week of September 18, 2022 through September 24, 2022 as National Adult Education and Family Literacy Week in Pennsylvania. Possessing adequate literacy skills has a direct impact on a family through child development, the ability to market oneself and retain a job with family-sustaining income and the pursuit of further education and training. According to data reported as recent as 2021 from the Pennsylvania Association for Adult Continuing Education, more than 1 million Pennsylvanians do not have a high school diploma, approximately 1.6 million adults struggle with reading, math and digital literacy and nearly 70,000 students dropped out of high school in the last five years. As a result statistically, these individuals are more susceptible to unemployment, poverty and have an increased risk of hospitalization. Attracting companies and investors to our communities requires an adequate supply of skilled workers. Improving the literacy of our citizens has a direct impact not only on the individual and their family, but on our communities, our economy and our competitiveness. I hope you will join me in co-sponsoring this resolution and help to bring awareness to the value of adult and family literacy. |
