Subject: | Providing for Coverage for Colorectal Cancer Screening |
I invite you to co-sponsor legislation that would update Pennsylvania laws regarding insurance coverage for colon cancer screening to coincide with the recommendations made by the American Cancer Society in 2018. In 2018 the American Cancer Society updated their colon cancer screening recommendations and is now recommending that people at average risk start screening for colon cancer at age 45 (down from the old recommendation of age 50). Unfortunately, Pennsylvania Statutes haven’t been updated and health insurance plans aren’t required to cover colon cancer screenings until age 50. There are roughly 750,000 people in Pennsylvania aged 45-49 who should have access to screenings, but cannot because PA laws haven’t been updated. Colon cancer has a 90% survival rate if it is detected early, but almost a quarter of the people diagnosed are already at Stage IV. We can significantly shrink the number of patients with advanced stage cancer and thereby increase survival rates by adopting this proposal. Therefore, I request your co-sponsorship. |
