Subject: | Giving Child Victims A Chance |
I invite you to join me in co-sponsoring legislation to help children who are the victims or violent crime, or whose parents have been the victims of homicide or other violent crimes. As part of the budget process (Fiscal Code), the General Assembly established the “First Chance Fund.” This program aims to benefit the children of incarcerated individuals who live in high crime areas, awarding them scholarships and grants. While commendable, I believe the First Chance Fund also should benefit children from the same high crime areas who are themselves the victims of violent crime or whose parents have been victimized or murdered. The absence of a parent from a child’s life can have a profoundly negative impact. The First Chance Fund benefits children who experience that absence because of their parent’s poor choices. I would like to see the same “first chance” be given to children who, also through no fault of their own, are victimized. We have a responsibility to help our crime victims and their children at least as much as we help the children of inmates. Your support of this legislation would be appreciated. |
