Subject: | PFC LeRoy D. "Whitey" Schaller Bridge |
In the near future, I intend to introduce legislation designating the bridge located on State Route 1013, known as Knupp Road, over the Hypocrite Creek, in Fairfield Township, Westmoreland County as the PFC LeRoy D. "Whitey" Schaller Bridge. After joining The 28th Infantry Division as a rifle man in the middle of a two week battle at Huertgen Forest, Mr. Schaller went on to the Battle of the Bulge where he, along many other members of the division, were captured. He was interned in Stalag IX B at Bad Orb in central Germany and held as a POW for 4 1/2 months. He was honored with several awards including the Good Conduct Medal, the American Campaign Medal, the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with 3 Bronze Stars, the World War II Victory Medal, the POW Medal (awarded after its creation, sometime after discharge) and the Order of St. Maurice Medal and Certificate awarded by The National Infantry Association on May 2, 2012. Please join me in sponsoring this important piece of legislation. |
