Subject: | Re-Introduction of House Bill 1097 - Merchant Marine Compensation |
In the near future, I plan to re-introduce legislation that will reenact the Merchant Marine World War II Veterans Bonus Act and extend credit to Marines that trained with the U.S. Maritime Service during World War II. The Merchant Marine World War II Veterans Bonus Act was signed into law in 2006 and provided a bonus payment of $500 to United States Marine veterans who served during World War II. This act expired on June 30, 2007, with a provision that all remaining funds would lapse into the General Fund. While this act provided the brave Marines who fought to protect the freedom of this great county a bonus payment, those Marines who trained but did not serve were excluded from this payment. My legislation attempts to address this issue by reenacting the Merchant Marine World War II Veterans Bonus Act and authorizing those United States Marines that received training from the U.S. Maritime Service between December 7, 1941 and August 15, 1945 to receive a bonus payment. Moreover, this legislation extends the application deadline to December 31, 2014 and the expiration of the act to June 30, 2015. Please join me in ensuring that all U.S. Marines who dedicated their time to train for WWII service are provided with the same opportunity to receive bonus payments as those who actively served.
