Subject: | Mandating Inmate Account Deductions for Restitution |
In the near future, I will be reintroducing legislation that would mandate both country correctional facilities and the DOC to make deductions from inmate personal accounts for the purposes of paying restitution, fines and costs. The Restitution in Pennsylvania Task Force issued a report in early 2013 regarding the level of collections in the Commonwealth. In seeking to maximize reimbursement of financial losses to crime victims, the task force made a number of recommended changes to state law. Currently, state and county level correctional facilities are authorized to make these withdrawals, however they are not required to do so. My legislation would mandate all correctional facilities to deduct from inmate personal accounts in order to maximize the ability of victims to receive their justly deserved restitution. I invite you to consider joining me as a co-sponsor of this bill. This is a reintroduction of SB 1029 from the previous legislative session. Co-sponsors included: BROWNE, TEPLITZ, SCHWANK, WOZNIAK, VULAKOVICH, ARGALL, FOLMER, RAFFERTY, ALLOWAY and VANCE. |
