MEMORANDUM

From: Representative Ryan A. Bizzarro
To: All House members
Subject: Resolution Recognizing November 2014, as “National Epilepsy Awareness Month” in Pennsylvania.

In the near future, I intend to introduce a resolution designating November 2014, as “National Epilepsy Awareness Month” in Pennsylvania.

Epilepsy is a neurological condition sometimes referred to as a seizure disorder and is characterized by recurring seizures. According to the National Epilepsy Foundation, epilepsy affects more than 200,000 Pennsylvanians and their families as well as 5 million families across the United States. It is the third most common neurological disorder in the United States after Alzheimer's disease and stroke and its prevalence is greater than that of cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis and Parkinson's disease combined. In fact, one in three adults knows someone with the disorder.

The National Epilepsy Foundation reports that there are an estimated 2.5 million Americans living with epilepsy. While medications and other treatments help many people of all ages who live with epilepsy, the Epilepsy Foundation data indicates that one-third of those living with epilepsy have seizures that cannot be controlled with current treatments and that more than a million people continue to have seizures that can severely limit their participation in all of life's experiences. That is why increased public awareness and investment in research toward better seizure treatments and a cure for epilepsy is more important than ever.

Please consider joining me in helping with prevention and control of epilepsy by raising awareness throughout the Commonwealth by designating November 2014, as “National Epilepsy Awareness Month” in Pennsylvania.
