MEMORANDUM

Posted: August 19, 2014 09:21 AM
From: Representative Maria P. Donatucci
To: All House members
Subject: Resolution Designating September 21, 2014, as “Peace Day in Pennsylvania”

In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution designating September 21, 2014, as “Peace Day in Pennsylvania.”

As you may be aware, September 21, 2014, will mark the 30th anniversary of the United Nations International Day of Peace, known as Peace Day, which was established by United Nations resolution in 1981 and first celebrated as a major event in San Francisco in 1984. September 21 was adopted by the United Nations in 2001 as an annual day of nonviolence and cease-fire.

Peace Day has been observed in Philadelphia since 2011. The United Nations Association of Greater Philadelphia established Peace Day Philly in cooperation with other groups in order to promote local participation in the International Day of Peace. Peace Day Philly activities are commendable for involving dozens of local and international organizations to promote peace.

Moreover, the Commonwealth was founded as a safe place for Quakers and other immigrants to practice their faith freely, which included believing not in war but in peaceful coexistence. As wars rage in nations around the globe, the need for peace and non-violence is clear. In that spirit, we ought to affirm the International Day of Peace by promoting Peace Day here in Pennsylvania.

With this in mind, I urge you to please join me in designating September 21, 2014, as “Peace Day in Pennsylvania.”
