House of Representatives
Session of 2013 - 2014 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: June 18, 2014 01:58 PM
From: Representative Mark B. Cohen
To: All House members
Subject: Freedom to Marry Resolution

Very shortly, I plan to introduce a resolution commemorating the right of gay couples to marry in Pennsylvania.

On June 26, 2013, the U.S. Supreme Court struck down Section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act of 1996 (P.L. 104 – 199), which denied legally married same-sex couples over 1,100 protections and responsibilities of marriage. Then on May 20, 2014, U.S. District Judge John E. Jones III struck down Pennsylvania’s ban on same-sex marriage, providing same-sex couples with the right to marry in Pennsylvania. However, the fight for full civil rights is not over. Pennsylvania must continue to strive for full equality by extending equal protections to all people in employment, housing and public accommodations, regardless of their sexual orientation, gender identity or expression.

Please join me in co-sponsoring this resolution recognizing June 26, 2014, as the one year anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court “Freedom to Marry” decisions and the May 20, 2014, U.S. District Judge Jones’ decision regarding the right of gay couples to marry in Pennsylvania.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Kathy Seidl of my office at 787-4117 or kseidl@pahouse.net

Thank you.
