MEMORANDUM

Posted: June 11, 2014 04:08 PM
From: Representative Mark Painter
To: All House members
Subject: Resolution Commemorating the 70th Anniversary of the Servicemen’s Readjustment Act of 1944 (GI Bill of Rights)

In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution commemorating the 70th anniversary of the Servicemen’s Readjustment Act of 1944 (GI Bill of Rights).

As you may be aware, June 22, 2014, will mark the 70th anniversary of the historic signing of the original Servicemen’s Readjustment Act of 1944, known as the GI Bill of Rights, by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. The GI Bill of Rights offered veterans educational and training benefits, loan guaranties for homes, farms or businesses, and unemployment pay for eligible veterans. Nearly eight million World War II veterans obtained educational and training benefits during the post-war decade as a result of the GI Bill of Rights. Furthermore, nearly two and one-half million World War II veterans secured GI Bill home loans during the post-war decade.

Various GI Bills have been recognized by Congress as landmark laws which have contributed to the development of the middle class in the United States. Moreover, the GI Bill of Rights has been heralded as one of the most significant pieces of legislation ever produced by the federal government.

With this in mind, I urge you to please join me in commemorating this legislative landmark.
