Subject: | Resolution declaring the week of August 18 to 24, 2014, as ARIPPA Week in the Commonwealth |
In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution declaring the week of August 18 to 24, 2014, as ARIPPA Week in the Commonwealth. The Anthracite Region Independent Power Producers Association (“ARIPPA”) was organized as a non-profit trade association in 1989. ARIPPA represents Circulating Fluidized Bed (CFB) electric generating plants that utilize coal refuse to produce alternative energy. The Commonwealth faces a legacy of more than two billion tons of coal refuse piles across the state resulting in acid mine drainage (AMD) which is the largest source of water pollution in the state, degrading 5,500 miles of rivers and streams. Remarkably these plants remove coal refuse from AML areas, convert it into alternative energy, and beneficially utilize CFB ash to reclaim formerly damaged areas back to their natural state, without any expenditure of tax dollars. Moreover, ARIPPA plant members have annually produced approximately 1,400 MGW of alternative energy and/or steam while providing employment for our citizens. Therefore, the House of Representatives should celebrate ARIPPA’s 25th anniversary by recognizing their efforts to produce environmentally beneficial alternative energy with this resolution. Please join me in co-sponsoring this worthwhile resolution. |
