MEMORANDUM

Posted: April 15, 2014 11:15 AM
From: Representative Joseph F. Markosek
To: All House members
Subject: May 15, 2014 as the "Measure Up/Pressure Down National Day of Action" in Pennsylvania.

In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution recognizing May 15, 2014 as the “Measure Up/Pressure Down National Day of Action: Roll Up Your Sleeves!” in Pennsylvania.

One in three (68 million) adults in the United States suffer from high blood pressure or hypertension. These conditions come with an increased risk for heart disease and stroke which are two of the leading causes of death in the United States. Additionally, it is estimated that only half of all parties have their condition under control. Costs to the nation because of high blood pressure or hypertension are estimated at $156 billion.

Medical practices across the nation are working together to increase awareness of high blood pressure or hypertension and to encourage those with high blood pressure to bring it under better control. In Pennsylvania, the following member groups will be participating: Geisinger Health System; Heritage Valley Medical Group, Inc.; Premier Medical Associates, P.C.; St. Luke’s Physician Group; and Susquehanna Health Medical Group.

These practices hope to reach a goal of 80 percent of all patients with high blood pressure or hypertension under control by the year 2016. They will meet this goal by raising awareness of the dangers of uncontrolled high blood pressure and encouraging everyone to obtain blood pressure screenings, partner with their healthcare providers and make lifestyle changes.

Please join me in recognizing May 15, 2014 at the “Measure Up/Pressure Down National Day of Action: Roll Up Your Sleeves!” in Pennsylvania by co-sponsoring this resolution.
