Subject: Request for Co-sponsorship: Resolution Recognizing “Workers’ Memorial Day”

In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution recognizing the Greater Wilkes-Barre Labor Council and “Workers’ Memorial Day” in Pennsylvania.

Workers’ Memorial Day is observed each year to honor those workers who have lost their lives on the job and to acknowledge the families and communities who suffer as a result of workplace deaths, illnesses and injuries. This observance provides us the opportunity to recommit ourselves to creating good jobs and safe and healthy workplaces for our fellow citizens.

According to the Federal Bureau of Labor Statistics, nearly 3 million individuals were affected by non-fatal work-related injuries and illnesses and over 5,000 worker fatalities occurred nationwide in the past year. During 2012 alone, Pennsylvania lost 163 workers due to injuries suffered in the workplace.

This year, the Greater Wilkes-Barre Labor Council will hold its ninth annual Workers’ Memorial Day event and candlelight vigil on April 24, 2014. In recognizing this local organization and the national observance of this important day, we honor our workers, both here in Pennsylvania and across this nation.

As we pay homage to those lost and provide support to their families, our goal must be to strive for the appropriate oversight and to take every necessary step to ensure a safe, healthy and hazard free workplace. Supporting our workers as they labor to provide for their families and communities is critical to maintaining a productive, thriving Commonwealth.

I hope you will join me in honoring our workers by co-sponsoring this resolution.
