Subject: | Recognizing the Pennsylvania State Police's Services and Critical Need for Additional Funding |
MEMORANDUM TO: All House Members and Legislative Assistants FROM: Representative Timothy S. Mahoney DATE: December 11, 2013 SUBJECT: A Resolution Recognizing the Pennsylvania State Police’s Services and Critical Need for Additional Funding In the near future, I intend to introduce a resolution recognizing the Pennsylvania State Police’s services to the citizens of the Commonwealth and its critical need for additional funding. The Pennsylvania State Police perform a growing number of services on behalf of Pennsylvanians all while chronically understaffed. As local municipalities have adapted to lower revenues, many have eliminated their local police forces, requiring the State Police to patrol those areas without any commensurate increase in funding. With the growing population of Pennsylvania, increasing mandates, and ever evolving criminal problems including a heroin epidemic, the State Police need adequate funding to hire, train, and deploy more troopers now more than ever. With the recent passage of Act 90 of 2013, the Commonwealth’s coffers are expected to see $156 million a year in new revenues. This resolution encourages the General Assembly to work with the Governor to use the first $100 million of those revenues to increase the State Police’s annual appropriation. This will give them the tools they need to fight crime and ensure the safety of Pennsylvania families across the state. Please join me in supporting this resolution to promote public safety. |
