Subject: | Children and Gun violence Awareness Month |
In the very near future, I plan to introduce a resolution designating the month of December 2013 as “Children and Gun Violence Awareness Month” in Pennsylvania to encourage the remembrance of children victims of gun violence. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the United States experiences epidemic levels of gun violence by claiming over 30,000 lives annually. The Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence reports that young adults, 24 years of age and under, constitute 38 percent of all firearm deaths and nonfatal injuries, and 18 children and young adults die every day in the United States from firearm injuries. Moreover, from 2000 to 2010, 1,356 children and teenagers were killed by guns in this Commonwealth, according to the Children’s Defense Fund. Tragically, on December 14, 2012, this nation suffered one of the most deadly shootings in history when 20 children and six adults were fatally shot at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. Therefore, as we approach the one-year anniversary of the shooting at the Sandy Hook Elementary School, I believe it is fitting that the House of Representatives designate the month of December 2013 as “Children and Gun Violence Awareness Month” in Pennsylvania and urge the residents of this Commonwealth to remember all the children who tragically lost their lives through gun violence. Please join me in support of this resolution. |
