MEMORANDUM

Subject: Flexibility in Volunteer Fire Department Funding

In the near future, I will be introducing a bill amending Act 511 of 1965, known as the Local Tax Enabling Act to provide for more funding for fire and emergency medical services.

My proposal will increase the local services tax from the current $52 to $75. In addition, this bill would require no less than 30 percent of the tax to be used to fund fire and emergency medical services.

The Townships and Boroughs of Adams County have asked me to give them another option for supporting our volunteer fire departments, ambulance and rescue squads. This will give our local governments additional flexibility in funding our first responders. Our volunteer fire departments, ambulance and rescue squads are under continued pressure for fund raising and training. This should help with recruitment and retention in our emergency services.
