Subject: | Recognizing the 110th Anniversary of the Wright Brothers Historic Flight |
In the near future, I intend to introduce legislation that would recognize the 110th anniversary of the Wright Brothers’ historic first controlled, powered, and sustained heavier-than-air human flight on December 17, 1903. Orville and Wilbur Wright spent years developing their flying machine in the back of their bicycle shop with extensive testing and numerous revisions. After weeks of delays caused by broken propeller shafts and bad weather, on December 17, 1903, the brothers braved a freezing, 27-mile-per-hour headwind – the Wright Flyer I flew under its own power for 120 feet on that beach in Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina. Their contribution to aviation, transportation, and human achievement touched off a new age culminating with man walking on the moon less than 70 years later. Since the time of that first fateful flight, there have been skeptics and critics who were consistently proven wrong. In recent years, some factions have sought to dispute the Wright Brothers’ status of being the first; the Smithsonian, among other respected institutions, has repeatedly debunked claims to the contrary. Unfortunately even some state legislatures have accepted these baseless claims as fact and so it is now more important than ever that we recognize these pioneers and demonstrate our respect for their indelible legacy in American history. Please join me in supporting this legislation and honoring these two outstanding Americans. |
