Session of 2013 - 2014 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: October 16, 2013 12:10 PM
From: Representative Maria P. Donatucci
To: All House members
Subject: Resolution Designating October 18, 2013 as "Mammography Day" in Pennsylvania and Recognizing October 2013 as "National Breast Cancer Awareness Month" in the Commonwealth to promote awareness of breast cancer issues and encourage women and men to take action to protect themselves against breast cancer

This year National Breast Cancer Awareness Month will celebrate its 28th anniversary while National Mammography Day will mark its 20th anniversary. Efforts to make people aware of all types of cancer, particularly breast cancer, remain important. For example, the American Cancer Society estimates that in the United States for 2013, 232,340 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in women and approximately 39,620 women will die from breast cancer, while roughly 2,240 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in men and approximately 410 men will die from breast cancer.

Much therefore remains to be done to educate both women and men about breast cancer health in order for them to become empowered to take charge of their own health through efforts such as: practicing regular self-breast exams to identify changes, scheduling regular doctor visits, having mammograms with their healthcare provider as recommended, adhering to prescribed treatment and knowing the facts about recurrence.

With that goal in mind, I will introduce a resolution designating October 18, 2013 as “Mammography Day” in Pennsylvania and recognizing October 2013 as “National Breast Cancer Awareness Month” in the Commonwealth. I hope you will join me in sponsoring this resolution and in urging residents to take action to keep them healthy regarding breast cancer.
