MEMORANDUM

Posted: September 20, 2013 04:24 PM
From: Representative Frank A. Farry
To: All House members
Subject: Condolence Resolution for Professor Alan Rosenthal

In the very near future, I will be introducing a condolence resolution honoring the life and contributions of Professor Alan Rosenthal, who passed away on July 10, 2013. I was fortunate to have personally known Professor Rosenthal as he was one of my professors at Rutgers.

Professor Rosenthal was the nation’s leading scholar of state legislatures, renowned both for studying and teaching about their workings. Having studied legislatures in all 50 states and consulted in at least 35 states to improve their functioning, he helped reshape and strengthen state legislatures across the country. You may recall, Professor Rosenthal was the featured speaker at a symposium for members of the Pennsylvania General Assembly in February 2011. The symposium was entitled, “Representing, Lawmaking, and Balancing Executive and Judicial Power: The Pennsylvania General Assembly Before and After the 1968 Modernization Commission.”

Professor Rosenthal authored more than a dozen books and hundreds of chapter, papers, articles and monographs. He established and directed Eagleton’s Center for State Legislative Research and Service, was instrumental in the development of the National Conference of State Legislatures, and worked closely with the State Legislative Leaders Foundation and the Council of State Governments. Professor Rosenthal was the recipient of many awards for his academic achievement and his public service.

Please join me in recognizing and honoring the life and career of Professor Alan Rosenthal. Thank you.
