Subject: | "Disability History Awareness Month" - October 2013 |
In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution designating October 2013 as "Disability History Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania. Disability is an aspect of the human experience that crosses all boundaries of humanity, with 12% of the population of the United States having a disability. Unfortunately, throughout American history, people with disabilities were subjected to discrimination and mistreatment by society. However, the early efforts of activists in the disability rights movement laid the foundation for future federal and state laws. The disability community has successfully mobilized over the years to enact laws to give people with disabilities important civil rights protection. Most Americans are unaware of the significant historic contributions that people with disabilities have made, and are continuing to make today, for the benefit of our nation. To ensure full inclusion of people with disabilities into all aspects of society, it is essential to educate the public and raise awareness about the history of the disability rights movement.
