House of Representatives
Session of 2013 - 2014 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: August 22, 2013 04:01 PM
From: Representative Jaret Gibbons and Rep. Patty Kim
To: All House members
Subject: Constitutional Amendment Increasing Term Lengths for the General Assembly and Instituting Term Limits 2013-2014

In the near future, we plan to reintroduce House Bill 920, Printer’s Number 983, which was introduced during the 2011-2012 legislative session. This legislation would amend the Constitution of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania by increasing the length of terms for members of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives and Senate. In addition, our bill would place term limits on the number of successive terms a member of the General Assembly could serve in each chamber.

Specifically, this proposal would increase the length of the term for a Representative in the General Assembly to four years and place half of the House districts on the ballot for election every two years. Representatives would be limited to three successive terms for a total of 12 years of service. Additionally, the Senate would see the length of its terms increased to six years. Senators would be limited to two successive terms for a total of twelve years of service.

We hope you will join us in co-sponsoring this legislation.
