Subject: | A resolution honoring the lifetime achievements of Jackie Robinson |
In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution honoring the lifetime achievements and lasting influence of Jackie Robinson. As you know, April 15, 2013, will mark the 66th anniversary of Jackie Robinson breaking the major league baseball color barrier. On April 15, 1947, Robinson made his major league debut at Ebbets Field before a crowd of 26,623 spectators. Robinson finished the 1947 season with a batting average of .297 for the Dodgers. He also compiled a .383 on-base percentage, a .427 slugging percentage, scored 125 runs, hit 31 doubles, 5 triples, 12 home runs, and drove in 48 runs. His exemplary performance earned him the inaugural Major League Baseball Rookie of the Year Award (later named the Jackie Robinson Award in his honor). Jackie Robinson is a true American hero. His courage and dignity taught our nation the strength of the human spirit when confronted with seemingly immovable obstacles and his legacy helps make the American dream more accessible to all. This resolution would set aside April 15, 2013, as “Jackie Robinson Day” to honor his lifetime achievements and lasting influence. |
