Subject: | Resolution honoring folk singer Pete Seeger |
In the near future, I plan on introducing a resolution honoring the folk singer Pete Seeger on May 3, 2014, which would have been the man’s 95th birthday. Pete Seeger was born into music; his father was a musicologist and his mother a concert violinist. His talent and love for music grew with him and was only matched by his love for his country and the potential he saw in it. His song “We Shall Overcome” became the anthem of the civil rights movement and his hunger for social and environmental justice was never satiated. He participated in Iraq war protests in his late 80s and, at 91 wrote the song “God’s Counting on Me, God’s Counting on You” about the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. A self-proclaimed student of American folklore, there is much that we could all learn from Pete. Please join me by co-sponsoring to honor this cultural icon and his life’s achievements. If you have any questions, please contact Kim Hileman of my office at 7-4117 or khileman@pahouse.net. Thank you. |
