House of Representatives
Session of 2013 - 2014 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: May 14, 2013 11:17 AM
From: Representative Mark B. Cohen
To: All House members
Subject: Co-sponsorship of Resolution Commemorating the 101st Anniversary of the Minimum Wage

Your co-sponsorship is requested of a resolution to commemorate the 101st Anniversary of the first-in-the-nation minimum wage adopted in Massachusetts on June 4, 1912.

According to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, “Of nearly 3.5 million workers paid hourly rates in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in 2012, 87,000 earned exactly the prevailing federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour, while 108,000 earned less. Sheila Watkins, the Bureau’s regional commissioner, noted that this group made up 5.7 percent of all hourly-paid workers in the Commonwealth. Nationwide, those earning the federal minimum or less accounted for 4.7 percent of the hourly-paid workforce. (The Pennsylvania minimum wage is equal to the prevailing federal minimum wage.)”

Please join me in recognizing the importance of a minimum wage by co-sponsoring this resolution recognizing the first-ever minimum wage adopted in the United States.

If you have any questions, please contact Kathy Seidl of my office at kseidl@pahouse.net or 7-4117.

Thank you.
