Subject: Resolution – Celebrating the election of Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio, Archbishop of Buenos Aires, to the Office of Pope

In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution celebrating the election of Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio as the first Pope from Latin America.

For Catholics, and especially Latin American Catholics, the election of a Pope is a momentous occasion. Furthermore, as both a Catholic and an individual of Latin American heritage, I share great joy in congratulating the world’s first pontiff from Latin America.

On March 13, 2013, the Vatican conclave elected Argentina’s Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio to become Pope, Bishop of Rome, and the Holy Father to the nearly 1.2 billion Catholics throughout the world. A native of Buenos Aires, Argentina, Pope Francis is the first pope from Latin American and the first Jesuit pope. Upon this election Cardinal Bergoglio took the papal name Francis. He is the first Pope to take the name in honor of St. Francis of Assisi. Like St. Francis of Assisi, Cardinal Bergoglio, now Pope Francis, is revered among Catholics for his work with the poor. It is the hope of Latin American Catholics, like myself, that Pope Francis will rebuild the Catholic Church through the teachings of poverty, humility and simplicity, and serve as a bridge between Europe and Latin America.

Following the results of this historic election, please join me in congratulating Pope Francis of Argentina, the world’s first Latin American Pope, by co-sponsoring this resolution.
