Subject: | Resolution - Satellite Imaging and Military Installations |
In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution that will memorialize the U.S. Congress and the Department of Defense to protect our United States military bases overseas and at home from satellite mapping applications such as those from Google Earth. Computer and satellite imaging technology continues to advance, including space-based systems, which can potentially reveal sensitive material and confidential sites to the public, thereby jeopardizing life and property. Countries such as Israel and South Korea have expressed concerns that these types of applications have increased security threats to specific military installations in their home countries. There have been reports that the international terrorist groups, such as Hamas, have used Google Earth to target Israel, and the 2008 Mumbai gunmen specified the use of Google Earth-type applications in planning their attacks against India. Our military members, as well as those of our allies, need to be protected at all times. The President of the United States and Congress together with the Department of Defense have a responsibility to protect the citizens of this country and our assets. I ask you to join me in supporting this important resolution. |
