Subject: | Property Tax Protection Act (Cyber Charter School Accountability) |
There are approximately 14 state-sanctioned, privately-run, and publicly funded cyber schools in Pennsylvania. Given that cyber charter schools cannot limit admission based on things such as intellectual ability, English proficiency, disability, and more, cyber education continues to be a growing avenue for families and supporters of school choice. However, that also makes cyber charter schools liable to the same judgments as brick-and-mortar charter schools and traditional public schools. I believe there needs to be increased transparency for charter schools. Taxpayers deserve to know exactly where their tax money is going. This legislation, titled the Property Tax Protection Act, would make cyber charter management companies subject to audit by the Pennsylvania Auditor General. This would hold cyber charter schools accountable and at the same standards we expect of our public schools. Please join me in co-sponsoring legislation that would continue to provide the transparency that all Pennsylvanians deserve. |
