Subject: Resolution on Ewing Sarcoma

In the near future, we plan to introduce a resolution urging Congress to direct the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to conduct a comprehensive study on the causes of Ewing Sarcoma.

Ewing sarcoma is a cancerous tumor that occurs in bones or soft tissues, such as cartilage or nerves, and is the second most common primary bone tumor in children. It is estimated that 250 children are diagnosed with a type of Ewing Sarcoma every year.

Earlier this year, we began hearing from several of our constituents concerned about the health of their loved ones and about a potential cancer cluster of Ewing Sarcoma in Washington County. These concerns prompted the Pennsylvania Department of Health to launch a study in Spring 2019 on Ewing’s family of tumors and childhood cancer incidence. While the study indicated there were not enough cases to meet the definition a cancer cluster, the study did indicate that the exact cause of Ewing sarcoma remains largely unknown.

Therefore, we are introducing a resolution urging Congress to direct the NIH to further study the causes of Ewing Sarcoma. We believe this is vital for protecting and improving the health of all Pennsylvanians.

We hope you will consider co-sponsoring this important resolution.

Thank you.
