| Subject: | Co-sponsorship of Legislation - Legalization of Marijuana |
| In the decade since a 2006 poll showed legalization of marijuana had about 30% support in Pennsylvania, much has changed in this country. States from coast to coast have moved toward legalization – those states are now reaping the economic and criminal justice benefits. This is why it comes as no surprise the most recent poll conducted shows a majority 60% of Pennsylvanians now support legalization. I am so pleased to see many of our most in-need residents all over the Commonwealth able to improve their health through medical marijuana, but I believe we can do more. My legislation, House Bill 2600, would not only provide for the legalization and retail distribution of marijuana, but also immediately expunge all criminal records for any conviction that would now be considered lawful. Pennsylvanians have spoken. They know the once ugly stigma behind marijuana is just a part of history now, and instead see the revenue generated and the reduced spending and incarceration in our criminal justice system as the way forward. I hope you will all join me in co-sponsoring House Bill 2600. |
