MEMORANDUM

Posted: February 21, 2023 09:42 AM
From: Senator Devlin J. Robinson and Sen. Greg Rothman
To: All Senate members
Subject: 78th Anniversary of Iwo Jima

In the near future, we plan to introduce a resolution commemorating February 19, 2023, as the 78th anniversary of the Battle of Iwo Jima, during World War II.

Iwo Jima was strategically important as an air base for fighter escorts supporting long-range bombing missions against mainland Japan. It allowed for sea and air blockades, the ability to conduct intensive air bombardment, and the destruction of the enemy's air and naval capabilities. The seizure of Iwo Jima was deemed necessary, but the reward wouldn’t come easy. The fighting that took place during the 36-day assault would be immortalized in the words of Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, who said, "Among the Americans who served on Iwo Island, uncommon valor was a common virtue.”

During this battle, the United States Armed Forces suffered the loss of 6,821 troops, and more than 19,000 were wounded or captured.  The iconic Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima photograph was taken during this battle, and it depicts five United States Marines and a United States Navy corpsman raising the American flag atop Mount Suribachi.

Please join us in honoring those who were a part of this courageous campaign.
