MEMORANDUM

Posted: December 6, 2022 06:36 AM
From: Senator Judith L. Schwank
To: All Senate members
Subject: Cross Filing Party Listing

In the near future, I plan on re-introducing SB 966, which requires the ballot to display the registered party of any candidate that runs for more than one party nomination or is nominated by more than one party on the ballot. The idea for this legislation was generated by constituents who have expressed a need for more information on the candidates listed on the ballot.

This bill will NOT eliminate cross filing, it will simply help voters know which party a candidate is registered in. If we are truly committed to giving voters all the information that is available, we should allow them the ability to know which party someone is registered for when they cross-file. This information would appear on the primary and general election ballots.

The legislation would simply state under the candidate’s name for the office they are running for, their party registration. An example of this is as follows:

John Doe
Running as Republican
Registered Democrat
