Subject: | Designating "National Safe Boating Week" in PA |
Recognizing the week of May 21 through May 27, 2022, as "National Safe Boating Week" in Pennsylvania and the start of the year-round effort to promote safe boating. More Pennsylvanians than ever are heading to the waterways for recreation and relaxation; and boating has become this Commonwealth's premier recreational activity as individuals discover the Keystone State's wonderful waterways, from canoeing and kayaking on the many creeks and ponds to deep water boating on large rivers and lakes. Safe boating practices and boating safety education are all boaters' responsibility whether first-time participants or seasoned operators. Basic knowledge, skills and safety equipment are required to ensure boat operators' own safety and the safety of their fellow Pennsylvanians who take to the water. Life jackets are the most important piece of equipment on a boat, as nearly 80% of individuals who have died in boating accidents in this Commonwealth were not wearing a life jacket at the time of the incident; and the law requires that a wearable life jacket be carried for each person on a boat; and lives could be saved each year by the simple act of wearing life jackets while boating. During the week of May 21 through 27, 2022, boating groups throughout this Commonwealth and the country are promoting boating safety and wearing life jackets. |
