Subject: | Recognizing April 22nd through April 30th as International Dark Sky Week |
I will be introducing a resolution recognizing April 22, 2022, through April 30, 2022, as International Dark Sky Week in Pennsylvania. Excessive light production, specifically during the night, has been shown to adversely affect human health, waste energy, disrupt wildlife, increase our energy consumption, and blocks our view of the night sky. The U.S. Department of Energy reported that over $3 billion in energy is lost to skyglow, which occurs when lighting is not properly directed towards the ground. According to the International Dark-Sky Association 83% of the global population lives under a light-polluted sky. There are steps Pennsylvania can take to reduce light waste by implementing best practices when installing outdoor lighting technology. I hope this resolution will bring increased awareness to protecting the health, safety, and wellbeing of all residents across PA. Please consider joining me in co-sponsoring this resolution. |
