Subject: Requiring Child Day Care Providers to Install Safety Guards on Doors

Dropping off a child at day care is often a difficult moment for parents, requiring them to entrust the safety and care of their child to someone outside their home. Child day care providers employ a number of safety equipment and best practices to protect the well-being of the children in their care; however, there is one risk area that demands more be done.

Of all childhood amputations, the fingers are most at risk for surgical removal, according to findings by researchers at the Nationwide Children’s Hospital. The study also showed that hand injuries caused by catching a hand between objects, such as a door, were the most common cause of amputation for children four years of age and younger.

To address this safety concern, I plan to introduce legislation that will require child day care providers to install safety guards on doors. Door safety guards, installed on the hinge side of the door, are designed to prevent children from inserting their finger or hand into the hinge area in order to minimize the risk of fracture, laceration, or amputation. The installation of these safety devices can prevent traumatic injuries, as well as the expensive treatment associated with serious incidents.

Please join me in protecting our children from serious injuries and ensuring their safety while in day care.
