Subject: | Historical Preservation of Barns |
In an age dominated by technology and urbanization, our rural farmlands remain an important commodity as they continue to feed America and the world. As agriculture has been and remains a cornerstone of our economy, historic barns represent our past, present, and future, and symbolize the heart of the family farm. Wonderful examples can be found across Pennsylvania’s countryside in all corners of the state. My proposal will offer an incentive for preserving historic barns in an effort to reduce landscape decay while enhancing community enjoyment and ensuring these important structures remain viable for agricultural use and tourism purposes. Tax credits will be issued for preservation of barns 50 or more years old. There will be a 10-year sunset provision on the tax credit that will give time for education and promotion without committing the commonwealth to a permanent program. I hope you will join me in this effort to honor our rich farming tradition and provide for the rejuvenation of these magnificent buildings. |
