MEMORANDUM

Posted: May 24, 2021 02:38 PM
From: Senator Doug Mastriano
To: All Senate members
Subject: Felony penalties for individuals who block emergency personnel from conducting their life-saving duties.

Soon, I plan to introduce legislation that would significantly increase penalties for individuals who obstruct emergency vehicles from passing through a roadway. Penalties would also increase for individuals who block a police station, fire station, ambulance station or hospital entrance.

Obstructing roadways and building entrances to authorized emergency personnel cannot be tolerated in a civil society. When it comes to emergency personnel response, seconds are the difference between life and death.

Over the past year, there have been reported incidents at protests where fire trucks were unable to quickly respond to arsons, ambulances were hindered from helping people with life threatening injuries, and police were unable to respond to violent crimes. Emergency vehicles were also vandalized and significantly damaged.

My legislation will significantly increase penalties and require jail time for those who impair emergency personnel from conducting their life-saving duties.

I urge you to co-sponsor this important legislation.
