Subject: | Optional Year of Education Due to COVID-19 |
In the near future, I intend to introduce legislation to allow parents the option to have their child repeat a grade level during the 2021-2022 school year due to COVID-19. Specifically, this would help address any lost educational opportunities during the 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 school years, regardless of whether a child has met the requirements to be promoted to the next grade level. This would also allow parents the option to extend special education enrollment due to COVID-19; specifically allowing these students, who may have reached 21 years of age on or after the issuance of the proclamation of disaster emergency, to continue to be enrolled in school for remainder of 2021-2022 school year. As we look to future months, post-pandemic, we must continue to assist parents and families in determining a best approach for their child. I ask that you consider co-sponsoring this important legislation. |
