MEMORANDUM

Posted: February 23, 2021 02:06 PM
From: Senator James R. Brewster
To: All Senate members
Subject: Haley's Law- Epilepsy Awareness and Response

In the near future, I will reintroduce SB 1081 from last session. The bill would establish procedures by which parents could give a school a physician-approved seizure management and treatment plan.

This bill would also provide teachers and school employees with online or in-person course of instruction provided by a nonprofit organization at no cost.

Victoria, whose 6-year-old daughter Haley has epilepsy and is at risk of having a seizure during school hours. If schools and teachers are not able to effectively plan for the possibility a student has a seizure, it could become a traumatic experience for the student, their classmates, and their teacher.

Establishing statewide access to treatment plans and training will increase both student safety and awareness of seizure disorders like epilepsy in a way that empowers, rather than hinders, our hardworking teachers and nurses.

Introduced as SB576
