Soon, I plan to introduce legislation amending Title 18 (Crimes and Offenses), adding Local Code Enforcement Officials as a protected class, under the grading of aggravated assault. 

The job of a code enforcement officers is an important part of the effort to provide a safe and healthy environment for the public. These officers review and approve construction plans, inspect and monitor work sites, and check to ensure all codes and ordinances are met for public safety. However, this line of work can place them in precarious situations, where threats of harm are not uncommon. 

Currently, under Title 18 certain public officials, such as police officers, firefighters, teachers, and parking enforcement officials are a protected class under the grading of aggravated assault. Therefore, aggravated assault on any official protected under this classification is considered a felony of the second degree. 

My legislation will provide code enforcement officers that same level of protection. Whereas, an assault causing bodily injury while carrying out their role as code enforcement officer, would now be raised from a misdemeanor of the second degree to a felony of the second degree.
